There was a long moment when I was making this set of biscuits when I thought, "Can you decide to throw them away before they go in the oven?" Well, stubborn as I am, I didn't. Surprisingly they were the best batch so far. Okay, the best of two but still. Looks are deceiving. I was in a state of panic the whole time so I am just glad they aren't burnt. So here's the skinny....

This is a recipe for Cream Biscuits I got from the Fannie Farmer Cookbook. The cook/chef who created the recipe hosted cooking classes in Seaside, Oregon. Sweet! The recipe had some interesting quirks and caused me to pause and panic.
-Dough can feel tender? I thought that was just meat.
-Dough can be shaggy? What does shaggy dough look like? Shaggy like a hair cut?
-Is that too much milk?
-F! That is too much milk!
-Me: 'RJ! Can you throw some flour on the counter please?'
RJ: 'Why is this such a mess mom? Is it supposed to look like that? Why can't you do it?'
Me: 'Cooking can be messy with me.'
RJ: 'Right.'
-Can I just throw this away?
-Why don't they tell you to roll this out?
-Really need to find a better way to measure how thick the dough is. Didn't I say that the last time?
-Well, biscuit sticks are okay, right?
-Really, I have to drudge it through melted butter?
-Seriously, melted butter?
-Maybe they will taste good.

Well, don't judge my food based on how it looks. They were great! I must say that the melted butter was a huge help! This is a keeper of a recipe. Now I just need to work on it a bit so that they look better. Hmmm, cooking with mama can be messy. I did have to scrape the counters down before washing them.

Dinner

Yes, I have been cooking. Some dishes I have cooked well. There were some enchiladas in there somewhere. Today was very enlightening though. I made some pork chops that were cooked well, tasted well and the boys thought they were great. They were however done before the rest of the side dishes so they were a few minutes overcooked. Not dry per say but not tender. I mastered the art of standing facing the fridge and using the 'last of' a couple of things. Seared in a cast iron skillet, turned down the heat, added garlic and poured in the last of the orange juice. turned down the heat, covered and simmered. My challenge was with the Alfredo sauce that covered the pasta. Wasn't getting cooked fast enough so I turned it on high and whisked it until it was thick and bubbly. When pouring it over the pasta I found I had burned the bottom of the pan. UGH! Stove you VEX ME!
Thoughts during the experience:
-Pickled ginger goes bad?
-Note to self, check the pickles in the garage fridge
-Is that too much oil?
-Turn the heat down so they don't dry out
-Shoot the chops are done but the sauce isn't
-They wouldn't put 10 as an option if it wasn't necessary right?
-Whisk constantly
-WHY is there a HIGH feature if you aren't supposed to use it!!!!

Best result? RJ, 'This dinner is great mom.' Yes, he will be a great husband someday.

Biscuits #1

Like pickles this is a commitment for Phillip. He loves them. I started with the basic recipe found in the Better Homes & Gardens cook book. The red and white checked one. This is my go to book. It's the one that my grandmother, Muzzy got for me when I got married. All the women in my family have one and we even compare the changes that have happened over the years. Yes the original one still has the best pie filling recipes.

So biscuits. These were my thoughts while reading the recipe and attempting to follow them to the letter(ish).
10,10,10
Is the baking powder expired?
Alum & cream of tartar shouldn't be on the same shelf.
10 isn't very many
Don't answer the phone!
Is microwaving butter bad?
Does cream of tartar expire? 2 5/8 is closer to 2 1/2 then 2 1/4 They don't all fit! There are more then 10
Measuring the thickness of the dough is KEY
What do you do about leftover dough?
Using an oven light is rather deceptive
How much time do you add after opening the door?

YEAH, Success! Here are the pics. They were edible. Bland but edible.
I learned that I need a better way of gauging how thick something is besides my finger (the space from knuckle to knuckle on my pointer finger is one inch). Fresh ingredients are important, so is checking in advance that you have everything you need. You can microwave butter from frozen but only just a little bit. And I will move the alum to another shelf.
Also, biscuits are in my opinion, a vehicle for spreads AND should be served warm. Thankfully I have an abundance of spread choices from my preserves this summer. Including the softened butter and honey from the farm we were set. I was successful in getting flaky layers on the ones that were cooked all the way through (note the comments about opening the oven door).

What I really learned was that you really need to have uninterrupted time to cook. Phone calls, children's needs, TV shows, FB; really are a bit of a distraction. But given good planning I think that cooking is do-able. It became abundantly clear that I need to plan for cooking; recipes, ingredients, time etc. This is where the kicker is. I like to plan many things in my life, not as much as the other members in my family prefer and obviously not nearly enough for cooking either. So here we are week one and the growth that I realize I need in order to be successful cooking is not what I thought at all.

This is going to be harder than I thought.

New Year Commitment

Aside from the typical New Year Resolutions that are still on the list from last year: loose weight for more than 6 months; be a better wife/mom/friend/fill in the blank; save money (you get the picture). I decided to make a commitment instead. I am going to become a better cook. Oh stop the laughing right now! I mean it. I know that there have been, how shall we say it, incidents? I can safely say that I haven't hurt anyone with my cooking. And yes, I know it is because I won't let people eat it when it is that bad; i.e. flame throwing chicken. I would like to be able to cook better consistently.

So, I need a plan. Surprise! So here are my thoughts...
-Julia Child's book(s)? WAY to big of a book, not enough pictures.
-A new recipe a day? Uh, yeah no.
-Master a few things? Reasonable.
-A new recipe a week? Well, we'll see.

I decided then to have a more organic experience with reasonable expectations. For now.
I will commit to at least one new recipe a week AND master a few things regardless of how many times it takes.

This begs the question, what to master? Well, I have mastered a few things over the years, and by mastered I mean cook consistently well...
-Chili
-Chicken enchiladas
-Cranberry chicken
-Pineapple meatballs
-Brownies
-7 layer dip
-French toast casserole
-Roasted vegetables
Aaannnd I think that is it.
I can cook relatively decently although not consistently...
-Marmalade roasted chicken
-Mac & Cheese (yes, the kind from the box)
-Pesto lasagna
If you count preserves I can include in this category pickles & assorted jams.

I do want to cook biscuits well. Fish would be most excellent. Asparagus for sure. So those are totally on my goal sheet.

Now since this is Heather taking this on, you know this will be hysterical. So I also commit to sharing the journey. But only if you help. I will post my exploits...flaming chicken and all, if you give me recipes. I will try those that I think I can execute with safety in mind and my children's selective palate. I will also share pictures so that you can really enjoy the ride.

To mark my progress I would LOVE you to share your exploits of my cooking. I know there are some great ones out there. You can email them, post them on Facebook or I think you can leave posts here too.

So to start things off I will try to post the picture of the flame throwing chicken so you can enjoy the 'Best Of'.

New Girl Penny

Okay, the super short of it...

We got a new puppy!!!!!!!!!!!

Penny is Phillip's Fathers Day present. She is an English Bulldog. She is 5 months old. She is the joy of the family since losing Hammie.

Yes, Hammie passed away this spring. It was very hard but he was 11 years old. We missed him desperately and knew that we had to go in a different direction with breed. So Phillip got his dream dog.

U.S. Citizen

Well, leave it to the Federal Government to generally mess things up and make life complicated. In applying for my passport (since you need one now to renew your driver license and do everything but sneeze) I learned that I was not a legal citizen of the U.S. And due to the luck of all things that are Heather, I was neither one of Canada where I was born. Mercy! In all the law changes, rule changes, form changes; my changes (birth that is) were misplaced. And since 9/11 I now had to go through Homeland Security and prove why I deserved such an honor.

Needless to say, it has taken time, money and a sense of humor. I must say that it was easier then I imagined; there was only one form to complete and only 10 pieces of "authorized, notarized copies". It took less time then expected; only 6 months, not the 18 months I was told. It was not free.

I was given the privilege of being sworn in as a Citizen of the U.S.A. on Monday, August 31st at 8am. I was a very excited girl. I am still giggly about it really. I know, ask anyone else it was rather silly- I had to promise to bare arms if required by law and all, but I enjoyed the moment. Waiting an hour and a half to raise my hand for five was less then thrilling for the boys but how often do you get to experience something like this.

I was the only Caucasian. They mispronounced my name twice, in two different ways. I was the only one who spoke only one language. I had the largest cheering section and I DID NOT nod off like the teen at the end of the line;)

Camping Trip

I took the boys camping last week. Since Phillip so eloquently puts it, "God did not intend for me to camp", it was just the three of us. Oh and the cousins. We spent two nights at Barview Jetty just outside of Tillamook. It only sprinkled one night so it was an odd trip, usually we get rained out! The big boys slept in a tent by themselves and fell asleep reading comics and talking. I was fiercely strict and insisted that the children be allowed to run in and out of the tents and jump on the air mattress, without shoes of course. I am not a neanderthal.

We spent three hours at the Air Museum and finally left because Kate and I couldn't take another minute. Who knew! We went to the cheese factory; enjoying the show, the samples and eventually ice cream. There were campfires and s'mores. Hot dogs and lots and lots of candy and grape soda. No showers, peeing in the bushes (the boys!) and the train. There was a Weather Rock in town. Note the sign, "Weather Forcast:ie rock is.......wet it is raining...white it is snowing...moving it is windy."

It was nice to get out of the office, away from town and to do something just the boys and I. The only bummer was that the Coast Guard said to stay out of the water because there were sharks close to the beach. Seriously? I have to say I was miffed because it was the first time I had gotten to the beach all summer and playing in the surf is one of the highlights for me. Maybe next time;)

Oh my gosh it is July!!!!!

We are getting RJ ready to head off to scout camp. This is the first year he does an overnight. He will be gone for three days and two nights. I am so excited! I think everything is packed and most of the patches are sewn to the shirt. He is really excited too. We'll see if he sleeps tonight at all. I am sure that by Wednesday he will be wiped out. It is amazing how quick they grow. I love to cheer them on as they gain independence. No longer my baby, but my little man.

Phillip has spent two weeks at home with the kids this summer so far. He is making the most of all the furlough and plant closures at work. The first week he had off was the first week of summer and my first week at work. He was very ambitious and set the bar high for the rest of the summer. They went to the Zoo, Omsi and a movie too. He had last week off too and there were more activities. He is doing quite well getting all the free events on the calendar and scheduling fun trips around town. It has been very nice for me.

I went back to work this summer and am a Preschool Director for the program that Jack was at last year. It is with a local congregation and is only part-time. It has been a nice way to shake the cobwebs off the brain. Slow to start but I'm getting there.

Easter

Here they are dying eggs. I am very proud, they both got to color eggs this year and I was able to finally use what I bought last year!

Then we spent the day at Ahmah (Rosa) and Ahyeh's (Richard). The kids had a fabulous time hunting eggs (there were 100!) in the rain. Notice the kids all have coats and hoods and rain boots. The moms (Kate and I) are missing all that is necessary to maintain a good hair day. We spent the rest of the rainy day playing board games and eating what RJ termed, "the best dinner ever!" My boys really like fried chicken and coleslaw.

Hammie has taken to burying his bones out back. He is what 11-yrs now and this is very new for him since being with us. Here he is nudging it under the playhouse/fence area. The other is his nose after the fact. Silly Hammie.

Multnomah Falls

We took a trip today and spent the morning at Multnomah Falls. We then toodled on over to Bonneville Damn and went to the Fish Hatchery.

The falls were beautiful! It was cold on the way to the bridge and was icy around one of the bends. We soldiered on though and had some of the best laughs going over the ice. There was Jack's favorite part when Phillip was carrying him and the stroller and started sliding backwards when Mama caught them both. Never hurts to wear a smile. RJ took a friend with him and it made the whole day much more enjoyable for all.

We saw a 10ft Sturgeon at the hatchery, he ways over 450lbs and is ugly as sin. We fed the trout and saw where they grow the eggs and had a great time watching them swim. How easy it is to entertain boys, all you need are sticks, fish and enough shade to keep them cool and enough sun to keep them warm.

Grauer Back-to-School

It is January and I am off to my first meeting for Grauer. I am on a board that holds a back-to-school readiness program. We distribute school supplies, back packs, coats, shoes and socks/underwear to get children ready for the first day of school. It is an amazing thing on distribution day. We give away to 700 children in August. This is the 8th year! I of course started just by writing grants. Last year though I was a co-captain for distribution day and helped with the set up weeks. Can you believe there are 250 people that volunteer every year to help get the items to the kids? We already have people buying coats and shoes. I can't wait! It becomes infectious, this thing that we do...well that or addictive;) You should see the smiles and the excitement of the kids. It is amazing what a small group of people can do when they put their heads together and follow their hearts.

Running

So to motivate myself this year I did it again, I signed up to do the Hood 2 Coast. I thought for sure I would be running by now. Nope, not even close. I just got my e-mail notification that my team captain wants me to register my info and I just stared at it. I want to do this, don't get me wrong. I am actually looking forward to the weekend of running with a great group of people. It was nice taking a year off and getting some perspective, for all the anguish it was invigorating...but I'm not with it yet. I've set up a training program even, to start in February. I have hit the gym hard the last couple of weeks and the soreness has been surprisingly welcome. A clear indicator that I am getting warmed-up to be motivated...maybe. But I have yet to hit the pavement. Maybe tomorrow?

We had some raging wind last night that took out the fence. What a great way to wake up, I'll tell you what. I went to let the dogs out (we are sitting Hercules) and much to my surprise two panels were laying on the neighbors tree! It would appear that fixing the fence moved to the top of the "To Do" list. You will note of course that the posts were not in concrete...not so good.

New Years Celebrations!

We are off with a bang! A new year, a new tradition. We had a quiet evening at home making ice cream Sundays and bowling on the wii. Spending time laughing out loud with my boys is the best way to end a day and start a new year.

Snowed In

Well, it is Portland, OR so when it snows the town shuts down. School was shut down for the week...three weeks off and two before Santa came! We spent time playing in the snow and going wild in the house! The boys wore their snow pants for three days straight! Phillip went to work only a couple of days and was able to telecommute the rest. An added bonus for me. As you can guess this was not my ideal...not much of a homebody really. So Phillip would take us out every night after my begging. Here are picks that I got with my digital camera, I will be getting the nice photos printed and put onto a CD soon. Well, lets be honest, sometime before next Christmas!

Well, we have been snowed in since Sunday...no school so far this week. The kids and I were fine until last night. Phillip took us all out for dinner and last minute shopping. Today the roads were clear, still no school? So we took Phillip to work and have been puttering around. We made it to the gym (finally) and then bowling, lunch of course and then our big visit to Santa! Jack asked for a horse, and RJ asked for a Wii...not sure how good they have to be for those;)

High Tea

Katie and I started a new tradition this year...there are some amazing things you can do with a girl! We went to High Tea at the Heathman...such fun eating small sandwiches and five different desserts while drinking tea and playing with the tea service. Lexi wore her "party shoes" and took her "party purse" and went to a party with Auntie Heather.

Happy Thanksgiving!

So the holidays are off with a bang and I am of a mixed bag at this juncture. I cannot wait for Christmas! Melancholy from time to time about last year. But excited about this year.

RJ has found a new love and Phillip is enjoying the hobby as well. I set up an outing for the boy scout group RJ is in to a Baseball card shop. They all had a great time there and got a starter kit. A book, cards and patch! The owner talked to the boys about collecting and things to look for and things to steer clear of. Now RJ is on a mission! He loves rookie cards and Phillip has an easy indulgence. Now the packs of cards are coming home faster then he can put them in his book and now they are planning an outing to get a new, bigger one! How did it go from action figures to baseball cards? I missed something I think. Soon he will be driving and dating!

We are having a quiet Thanksgiving and then the Xmas season begins! We will be getting a tree this weekend and going to the zoo for the holiday light event. I can't wait!!!!!!! I love Christmas! Already thinking of all the fun things we are going to do! Decorations will be pulled out Friday and the season is official! I don't do the crazy shopping thing though so no worries. It is all about having fun with the kids for us. My list is ever growing for activities with them. Ugh, I can't help myself!

Disney

We finally took a vacation! As usual we went to Disneyland and had an amazing time! RJ took us on his favorite ride, Buzz Blasters, 10 times! Jack was old enough to ride the Matterhorn and when he got off, he summed up the trip..."That was awesome!!"

It was a quiet week there so only one day where we had to wait in line (veterans day). We saw the fireworks, hit every parade, rode every ride we wanted and got to ride w/ the engineer at the front of the Monorail! Nothing can beat a fun time with the family. It was a great week!

There was no school on Friday (or Thursday) and so I packed up the boys and we spent the morning at the zoo with some friends. We saw the new baby elephant, Sam. Amazing thing to watch. Couldn't find the setting without a flash in time to snap a pic so you are stuck looking at my babies instead!

Pickling

Because I have nothing else to do...I thought I would pickle.

It is an indulgence for Phillip.

They are so bold in color before I pour the brine. I love to see them clean and in the jars. There is a small pleasure I get when I am done and have something I made that others enjoy. Must be why I started making jam too. That or I have found my stride as a domestic. So long as no one wants clean socks!

Army of Women

If you are a woman and are reading my site, please click on Army of Women. This is an effort by Avon and Dr. Love to recruit as many women as possible to be available for research studies for Breast Cancer. Regardless of your "demographic" they are looking for you. This program will link researchers with women who are able to participate in studies on breast cancer. They need survivors, they need those that are cancer free. They need every age, geographic location and ethic group to participate. We are being called to join the ranks of those finding a cure, a vaccine and a treatment. Help me.

It is with a greater passion that I am asking this from you. This year has seen breast cancer take the life of my Aunt Connie.

This year, I found a lump. This year, at 32, I had my first mammogram. The lump they found required another mammogram. I then needed an ultrasound. I then needed an MRI.

My lump is benign.

I can only share with you the terror of looking at my children and thinking of them spending one day without me. I can only hope that the fear that I felt for the last month be something that skips you and those you hold dear. I can only express gratitude for those that walked with me during this time of my life. I am desperate to find a cure. We all need a life that is full of our loved ones and our children.

Please, I implore you, help me.

Soccer Tourney

RJ was in his first soccer tournament this weekend. He played two games on his birthday. One at 10:30a and another at 4:30p. They won both games, playing really well. The final game was today at 4:30 and it was a hard game. The boys played well and were very aggressive with the ball. Their team won and took first place!

RJ played defender all weekend and loved it! He is now called the Brick Wall by the parents for not letting anything by him. He used his whole body and charged every ball that came his way. He has found his place on the team for his big kicks. He was awesome. I am so proud! He was really anxious for the game but settled down and played hard. He just wants to play his position well and knows that is what helps the team. He isn't about how many goals he scores, he doesn't care if he scores at all, he is cheering on his team as hard as the parents.

He is such a great kid! What an amazing thing to witness. I just love my guy!

So I cleaned the kitchen and even swept the floor so I am taking a moment to upload (or is it download) some new tunes to my ipod.

When the mind has a moment it is amazing where it wanders...

Why is the perfect apron so elusive? When did it become an desire? I have one that I love the color and it has pockets but doesn't cover the girls. The other one I just got covers, is great color and yet, has no pockets.

I need to get a Brita and stop the water bottle madness. I realized this point when I drank three half bottles out of the fridge while rearranging and putting things in their place. Yes I have a labeled fridge...I have three boys...they know where the mustard is because it has a spot and I never get asked.

I recylce and try to buy local (organic is out of the budget of a single income family most of the time) but am I green enough? I like the idea of a garden but can't keep a simple African violet alive w/out Phillips help. I love the recycling bin- one big one and I now have a half full garbage can each week and overflowing recycling bin. I lament though what I do toss.

My blog is green right? No wasted trees for paper for letters. Or is something lost by not having the personal touch of a letter. That I believe is another issue all together.

It really sucks that Avatar is over!

Well, time to get back at the mess...ipod is now synced up.

The summer blahs

there are dishes clean but still in the sink, going on a week I think.
There is laundry in the dryer and wash, not moving themselves. Clothes to iron piling up.
Half the house is prepped for painting, furniture is in no mans land, pictures are down.
The beds are not made, the bathrooms need cleaned, and there is more clutter then even I can handle.
Yet, here I am sitting in front of this computer, putting it all off.
Not sure if it is the summer blah, a slump or just really not motivated. God I hope I stay the path and finish something.

Maybe if I list the things I have finished?
-Grauer back to school is done and was a huge success! Yes I was the lady in charge, but only for the day. 663 kids this year were served! I am so thrilled! It has been something I have been working on as a board member all year.
-The last big grant went out yesterday, I have been working on this one for about a month. Yeah!
-Uh, my calendar is full.
-I have made it to the gym this week.
-Vet apts, dr apts, summer camps, getting Phillip ready to head out of town, dog sitting, painting.

Okay, I feel a little better, but not much.

I will finish something today, that will not be undone by the time the kids wake up from a rest...that means the bathrooms will wait!

Air Show

Took in the Hillsboro International Airshow today. Went with some friends of ours. They won tickets and we got to tag along:) It was great! Lots of fast planes and helicopters, the boys even got to climb into a Blackhawk (I think that was one of them). Only able to take a few snaps as the planes were fast. Did I mention that? Lots of jets so lots of noise!

The boys and I spent a week at Mt. Hood with my sister, our cousins and all the kids. It was a blast! We spent the week swimming and letting the kids run around and yell really loud! We took them up to Timberline one day and they went to Skibowl another. Great times:) We were so busy having fun and the camera was never within reach so you are only privy to a fraction of the memorable moments.

It was a Deere of a Birthday for Jack! John Deere tractors and Gators are his current fave so it was the theme of the week. Lots of shirts, sweatshirts and good old dirt.

He had a fun time this year and there were a great group of kiddo's that came to help us celebrate. Everyone walked away with a tractor and Jack had fun just playing with his friends. Oh and he got a fish from Aunt K-K, gotta love Joey...he has lasted longer then the five days Phillip and I were betting on, or counting on;)

It is shaping up to be a difficult year.

Ken was in the hospital for a very hard couple of weeks. He had pneumonia and they finally found a kidney stone (size of a golf ball!). He spent a couple of days in the ICU w/ a number of tubes trying to get him stable and feeling better. It was very hard on the family. He is home and recovering, they will remove the stone once he is strong enough to handle the tx.

My dad's sister- Aunt Connie- passed away this week. She has been battling breast cancer for 4 years. She has been fighting hard. We are so proud. She is no longer in pain, but was taken too early and has left an awful hole. My heart aches for my Uncle, my grandfather and deeply for my dad. So sad, so scary and f'n sucks.

I have been spending my days lamenting the missed moments and crying over the quilt I didn't finish. Yes, the bugger I have been working on hand quilting for what a year now, nope, didn't finish it in time. Yeah, I suck. But I am really having a hard time shaking all this off. My faith is strong, I am feeling God's love, but really are you serious? Don't get me wrong, I don't feel the why me's because it isn't happening to me; and I am not suffering as those around me are, but seriously, can it let up just a bit? So I am just kick'n around, not getting anything accomplished and not even able to distract myself.

May you hold yours closer and hug them tighter; may you call those you think of, mend fences, kiss faces, smile and say I Love You. May you feel peace and love in your heart. May you be blessed by those you love.

Belt Promotion

So it is not the children that are over scheduled...it is me. Second week of summer and I am ready to just fall on my face. As a result I am forgetting to mention the biggest accomplishments thus far. I know.

RJ got promoted from his yellow belt to his green belt!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are soooooo proud of him. He has been working on his tae kwon do belt for almost a year. He has been amazing to watch. He has quite the similar temperament that I have- sensitive, stubborn, emotionally responsive to most if not all situations. However we are different creatures when it comes to competition. I can't remember if I have blogged on it before but, I am very pushy with my children to try harder, do better and I can get down right bossy about it. I know. So it has been a very difficult year for me because there wasn't the type of progress I wanted from him. So of course in my way, I bribed, cajoled and overall made a muck of things trying to motivate him to do better/ try harder. Well I'll be damned. The one who did the most growing this last year with tae kwon do, was me. What I have come to see in RJ are all these wonderful traits that I don't have, that amaze me, and I have sometimes missed. Mainly because as a parent I am always helping, teaching, and generally being in his face. I was forced to take a step back-much pushing from his teacher- and see RJ for all the wonderful things he has to offer. Such as being very much like his mother and doing things his way on his schedule.

My amazing child enjoys life, every moment of it. When he sets his mind on something he can do it- easily. He loves to make friends, and he is good at it. He is very thoughtful of others, very polite, kind hearted and tender. Most of the things in life that cause stress at this age- loosing your teeth in a way that makes you look like a beaver- he finds hilarious! He can make just about anything funny...he is not afraid to laugh, out loud, at himself- or at whatever strikes his fancy. He is not easily embarrassed (always a great trait in my family). When he has to get up in front of a crowd- church pageant, school pageant, 20 people for the belt promotion ceremony- he performs!
With tae kwon do, he was never stressed about his progress. He just enjoyed the process. He never saw it as a chore, or as work. He just had fun.
Whenever I say his name or think of him I see him smiling, laughing, and just being a goof. God I am blessed. He is so much fun to have around.

Oh and I forgot the camera, so Phillip had to run to the corner store and get a disposable one...should have them developed soon and will post them then. I know. Phillip said it already, "like we do this everyday, why would you bring the camera?" RJ thinks Phillip is very funny. Must be where he gets it from;)

The kiddo's went to my folks for the weekend and enjoyed the Sandcastle competition. They came home full of sand and smiles! Phillip and I enjoyed a weekend of catching up with each other and activities w/out "help". Did get my jam done and the yard looking respectable too:) Oooh and we saw a movie and we didn't have to rush home to get the babysitter! It was great!

Okay, so I never really rant about home projects like I should but this time I couldn't resist!
We just got a tankless water heater. Yes mind you, it was the week we were trying to get out of town and I had no water, let alone hot water, for the day that they were converting but that aside...
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What an amazing little thing! Not only do we not use gas when we aren't using water (always pissed me off that you were heating water you weren't using at the time), but it takes so much less water getting it up to heat! It only takes as long as it takes to travel the pipe from the tank to the faucet. We are now water misers! The added bonus is that we run the water heater at a lower temp because you realize how not hot it needs to be. No waiting for it to get too hot and then mixing the cold w/ the hot to get it warm enough.
But when I was canning last night I needed to have the lids soaking in hot water while waiting to fill the jars (sorry if you are not interested in the small details of home canning) and I just had Phillip turn up the heater to 130 and then when the sink was filled I had him turn it back down to the 115! What a great way to save water, heat and time! I didn't need to boil the water to fill the sink (we don't have insta hot I know we suck) or run it forever to get it sorta hot!
Love it! Plus there are a thousand little features of the Rinnai (the brand we got) that make it such a good investment. (P.S. after all the research we did- don't get the brand at Home Depot off the shelf.)
Sorry to torment you with small items, but I really love the thing. Makes me want to SING!

Aunt Kim sent these great pics of the boys at the zoo (she is much better organized then I, she remembered her camera;) It was a great day admiring the albino alligator, checking out the elephants eating and the elephant statue that made noise when you sat on the trunk and watching the red panda. RJ spoke ceaselessly about it in his journal for school and when he got to talk in front of the class. My favorite was the huge turtle that we didn't notice at first because, as RJ was quick to point out, he looked like a rock as camouflage. Jack just ran everywhere and was under a spell w/ the monkeys and alligator. It was great to hangout with Kim and Shaun and Natalie...it was a perfect outside day, one of the few that was cool and overcast so the animals were out and active. It was great to see another zoo that was well done, a fierce competition for best zoo we have been to now, Hogle way before the San Diego, not even a competition actually. Definitely a must see if you make it to Salt Lake.

Well, it just is kinda the way things are going around here. My sister and her Sam are having a hard go of it. His dad passed away today after a difficult fight when he had complications from a hip replacement. We are so sad. I'm not sure how much more Kate can manage. It has been a very devastating year. She lost a good friend from school the day that Pop died too. My heart breaks for them. We are playing pass the kids and I will be staying with them Friday and Saturday after my parents bring them home today. They have been enjoying the beach for the last few days and are coming home to see their dad before he has to go down to take care of the estate. We are all to young for this, rather unfair for Sam I think.

Of course the only pictures I have from this last Easter when Phillip, the kids and I finally met him are of the kids and his feet. So here are the littlest miracles that brought him joy and made him laugh.

We just got back from a road trip, done of course, Erwin style.

Friday-May 9: gym, swimming lessons, lunch w/ Phillip, pick Lexi up from dr where Connor was being seen for injury, laundry, pack, laundry, load car, clean house, load car, volunteer at school carnival, Phillip loads dog and Jack, picks up dinner, RJ and I at school and the mad dash to La Grande begins...check in really late, struggle w/ a newbie at hotel check in...sleep as much as possible in as little time as possible.

Saturday-May 10: drive to Bruneau, met newest niece- Ainsley- beautiful I might add, paint, play, hang out w/ cousins and grandparents.

Sunday- May 11: (mothers day) paint, run, great dinner w/ the tribe- Sid, Judy, Grammy, Aunt Mary, Russells crew and Phillips crew, have a great time w/ the cousins, eat a wonderful dinner.

Monday- May 12: do a ton of stuff in too little time, Jack went w/ Grandpa to feed cows- mind you it was very exciting yet intimidating- grandpa had to bring him back before going to feed across the way- as soon as he left, Jack melted down into tears because he was left behind. Boys took Gramma out for lunch and shopping. Drove to UT, sadly missing Jess. Got into UT at about 11p due to road improvements. Enjoyed listening to the kids goof off in the tent Kim and Shaun set up for them while having a couple of full strength drinks in their "kitchenette" of a bar:)

Tuesday- May 13: Aquarium in the morning, broke Kim's car DVD player (very nice player in a very nice new car) on the way to lunch, Phillip visited w/ Ken.

Wednesday- May 14: Whole family went to visit Ken, had a great time, great lunch and really enjoyed catching up. Kids ran the rec room w/ their video games and TV time...met up w/ Kim and Shaun at the Hogle Zoo- saw an albino alligator- rather odd really, enjoyed rush hour SL style and had a great pizza dinner until Jack knocked over a glass of water then turned around to see what he did and knocked it onto the floor- it was a beautiful sound when it hit the hardwood floor! We rock!

Thursday- May 15: RJ and Jack are totally exhausted and really not user friendly so Phillip took Ken to the dr apt minus Mama E. Boys and I enjoyed a park visit w/ Kim and Natalie until RJ took a metal pole in the forehead, causing a large bump and hard bite to the lip, matching fat lips for the boys since Jack had a mishap w/ the wall earlier in the morning getting dressed. Gotta love having boys! Apt for Ken went great! They removed the staples and the incision looks amazing. He will be sitting up in about 3 weeks and will be done w/ the antibiotics about the 9th of June. He will be heading home around the beginning to middle of June. He is of course very bored but looking amazing for what he is going through.

Phillip and I watched Miss Natalie while the rents went for dinner...it was rather quiet really, she is an easy baby and doesn't even fuss, lucky parents;)

Friday- May 16: Visit Ken on way out of town, make it about one hour out, Phillip and I switch so I can drive and at about Bringham, going around 85mph RJ lost his lunch- half out the car window the rest on his dad...long drive to grandmas with the windows down. Couldn't meet w/ Jess again as we all smelled like, well we smelled.

Saturday- May 17: (my birthday) we ruin grandpa's TV by making it digital vs analog, finished laundry, picked up the dog- he had a great visit w/ Sid and Judy- he even went out into the fields w/ Sid and had a great time- mind you the smell back to Portland was better then from UT to Bruneau but it's debatable how much better. We wrapped up the drive in time to defrost Conney dogs and put them on the grill because if we eat out in the next 10 days it will be more then our little tummies can manage. On the last four miles Phillip and I were laughing so hard because we realized that we were that family. You know National Lampoon, that family. Hammie climbed into the seat w/ the kids and layed on RJ's lap, by then we had run out of snacks, water and our minds- before we hit Troutdale.

It was wonderful to see everyone- although we are seriously bummed that we missed Jess not once but twice- and we were so glad to have time w/ Ken. Amazing- simply amazing.

Catch up

Ken's surgery went well. He is wrapping up a week in the hospital before he transfers to the care facility. We leave on the 10th and will be in UT some time after Monday the 12th. It is getting pretty busy here getting geared up to go. Will pull the whole drive to Bruneau in one day this time. I think I have gotten enough stuff for the kids to do. We'll see what the power of seperate DVD players hold. Have a happy Mother's day to all you out there. Especially the ones that do it all.

The tulips are out and then the frost and snow came. Could it be spring?
Hard to believe that we are still shaking off the winter weather and I am quickly trying to over plan RJ's summer. I know, I know, this is all odd for me too. I really have no idea what I am doing w/ the whole parenting thing and I have fallen into some rather odd rhythms. Two years ago RJ wasn't signed up for anything and it was a bust of a summer, well, maybe because I was on bed rest and delivering a baby that was why, who knows really. Last year I overcompensated and scheduled the child to the week. It was also a bust. And by bust I mean, fits, tears, fighting and well, overall grumps. So I am trying a new strategy this year. I am signing him up for the few things he liked last year and planning some trips away from home w/ nothing to do but hang w/ the cousins and see where that gets us. I am hoping a better year to be had by all.
Now mind you we had no kitchen and mama e was in a serious state of doldrums (to put it mildly) so we are already ahead of the game. A fridge, a stove and food that is not from a Frito's bag, and a more happy mama.
What an odd world we live in though. I really am walking a thin line on this schedule issue. It is a "flash point" for some. There are the moms that don't schedule anything and then there are the moms that will pay an arm, a leg and their first born grandchild, in order to get the kids in one camp after the next. So different now, honestly I think the issue isn't how hard kids are to entertain or how dangerous it is to be unsupervised, I know that most of my hangups are mine, not my kids. So here is to jumping off into the deep end and hoping there is water. I am going to teach my child independence by giving him freedom. I'll follow Phillips lead and say, "you can't teach a child responsibility without risk." I will let him make his own time, I will let him walk around neighborhood and play with his friends. I will show him how to get to the store and let him walk if he wants, I will show him the way to the park and let him go on his own. Okay, when he is ready...he will tell me when he is ready right? I just need to be ready to listen.

I find it very therapudic to blog when I am feeling overwhelmed. It helps me to focus sometimes. Other times it is a distraction from those things I like to ignore, like ironing.

It is gearing up to be a busy spring, well really summer. Phillip's mom just had sinus surgery and it went well. We are relieved by that, never pleasent from what I hear. His brother Ken is scheduled to have surgery in Salt Lake, UT April 25th. We will be taking an extended vacation to Bruneau and then into UT for about 10 days. We will be driving w/ the boys...yeah! Ken will be in UT for a month after surgery so we are going to go hang w/ him for a while and visit our friends. Phillip has only been to UT for the layover when going to DC so we are planning on seeing the sites and getting to know the valley when it is not under a mountian of snow.

RJ is in the process of being evaluated for school. We all know that he is supper bright (like his father) but he is having a hard time. For awhile we thought it was his sensory disorder but it would appear he has a learning hic-up. Quite the trouper, really. As far as he is concerned we are the ones w/ a problem beacause we don't know how to teach well. Go w/ your victories I say. Better to be a little cocky vs. defeated.

Hmm, other then that there are lots of loads of laundry, dog baths and apointments. Still trying to get my health in check after my surgery last year and as ever, balance is w/in reach and I do something stupid, like the Shamrock run and we start over. Gotta love being human w/ limits. I have never been very accepting of that though so I will be better and I will do the things I want, there must be a way. A quick catch up I guess is in order, I had to have a total hystorectomy last January for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which is PCOS, which wreaks havoc on your hormone balance including insulin. It is now a constant battle to lead the life I want and stay out of menopause. Because the insulin problem caused the PCOS I will forever be on the high risk side of diabetes and yet, the exercise that will keep it at bay, causes my other hormones to fluctuate in a rather radical way. Hot flashes and night sweats aside, the mood swings are a b**ch. You can guess how much fun Phillip's life is. God love him, I know I do.

Spring Break

So I finally am taking pictures. Must be spring!

We went to the beach for the weekend the last couple days of spring break. Honestly I ran out of things to do in Portland that I had coupons for...shhhh.

It was a wild weather weekend. We left Friday morning and hit a ton of snow on the pass. When Phillip drove over that afternoon it was clear as a bell. Hmmm, I had the kids, dog and snow and he had a quiet clear drive. Bitter but not sure who at, him for working and being blessed or me for not being patient and leaving w/out him.

Here are photos of how it really is to live in the pacific northwest. If it is cold, wet and raining, just wear boots. Hammie dog loves swimming in the ocean, especially when chasing other dogs. We also hit the Columbia River Maritime Museum. Yes that is Phillip at the top of an anchor. He was showing RJ that you could climb the chain. I tried not to freak out and just take a picture but I admit, I have a weak constitution...when it comes to my boys.

Easter

Okay, so I have been a little busy w/ the holidays. We'll all get over it some day.

Spent Easter as a family, I know we skipped church, we didn't want to go with everyone we only see twice a year...heathens that we are;)

After eating our fill of healthy foods we headed to Ama's (Connor and Lexi's grandmother) for Easter dinner. After the year we have had I just didn't have it in me to host another family meal. Again, we'll all get over it someday.

Here they are hunting eggs at Ama's house. It was great fun for the four of them. RJ and Connor then took turns hiding the empty eggs for another hour or so until dinner was ready. What a surprise they found one that I had hid. I always forget one.

RJ was ready this year to take his first communion. Being Lutheran it is important but not overwhelming for the kiddos to participate. There were a couple of classes and they made the bread that was eaten at the communion held on Maunday Thursday. As his entourage, we converged on the church and had a Sader dinner and then proceeded to have a wonderful service. There were all of us, his friend James, Aunt Kate, cousin Connor, Nana, Papa, Oma and the four other boys that went with him. Quite the trend for RJ to be in a group of all boys. Quite the handful, and funny group;) He got his own cross to wear and now can go to the communion rail w/ Phillip and I. It has been a great year watching RJ grow into an amazing person. I love being blessed by being his mama.

Fun Weeked

RJ and Phillip had an absolute blast at the PBR (professional bull riding) event that the scouts all went to. Here are pictures of RJ with Buckshot...apparently very intimidating at a glance but he licked Phillips hand so was quite the old softy...or he knew to be very afraid of my Men!

I did manage to squeeze in the Shamrock Run. I did the 5K because Phillip and I were teaching Sunday school and I had to run, take the max home and be showered, dressed and ready to go starting at 8:05 and out the door to church at 9:30. I did it! That and I had a hell of a run...9.25 minute mile! Better then last year at a 10 minute mile. I was motivated:) Nothing like running alongside everyone saying, "gotta get to church, gotta get to church". I placed in the top 1/3 for runners in my grouping (whatever that means); top half for women. Yeah! Will tackle better training for the 8K next year and plan not to be teaching;)

All in all a great weekend full of busy busy Erwin boys. We went out for breakfast, shopping, biking, running, writing letters, book store and movie night all in a whopping three days. Ah. Gearing up for the rest of the week!

RJ has his first communion on Thursday and today we made bread w/ the rest of his group to be eaten that night. We are very excited for him. He is enjoying making friends and we are loving to watch him grow into a wonderful guy that is great to be around. Bragging rights aside, he is an absolute delight!

Breathe

I must remember to breathe....

You think you are busy w/ little kids because you are chasing them all over and seem to be really wiped out at the end of the day. As they get older you just trade the busy for activities outside of the house...

Last weekend RJ had the Pinewood derby on Friday night. He made a great car, he and Phillip worked really hard cutting and sanding it to the right shape. Then RJ and I spent time painting, placing the stickers just right and sealing it. So glad about the last step, since Jack thought he should paint too when I wasn't looking! We were able to remove the silver glob w/out incident. He and Phillip went to the race and had a great time! Well until his weights fell out of the bottom and his car jumped the track, crashing and breaking into many pieces. Needless to say that was the end for RJ, he was crushed. I would have liked to see the whole thing, it was amazing from what I heard, flying over the track. Learning moments you know.

Then on Saturday he had his first Lacrosse practice. He is loving it! Such a surprise, it is a very fast moving sport that is very demanding physically. Not something I ever thought he would like... he is having a great time though.

Then on the Sunday was a scouting event to the mountain. RJ and I went to this one w/ a group of his buddies and we tried out snowshoeing. It was a blast! I think RJ and I have found our winter sport...like we have time for more;) He had great fun sledding and w/ the snowball fight. We made it back in time for dinner and I was spent. RJ fell asleep early and we let him sleep in on Monday. Nothing better then a mental health day. He made it to school eventually and it was a good day.

This last weekend was just Lacrosse and then a weekend w/ Nana and Papa at the beach. He kept busy w/ his brother playing on the playground, digging in the sand and baking. I was glad to have a weekend w/ Phillip and getting caught up on rest. We are now gearing up for RJ again this weekend so we are all needing rest. RJ and Phillip are going to a bull riding show, more Lacrosse and then a Communion class. I am hoping to squeeze in the Shamrock run but we will see.

I finally have the pictures from when we were in Utah. There was so much snow that Jack nor I could walk in it. It came up to my knees and Jack was covered. So here are photos of him attempting to play in the snow. He enjoyed filling the bucket and trying to make a snow castle!

The service for Pop was today and I have to say there is a lot more peace in my life now. It has been a rather empty month for me with no one to fret over, now that I have had my chance to say goodbye I finally have a quiet within me that is pleasant. It has been a long couple of months and I am so blessed to have had all the moments of joy that came from all the struggle. Love is patient. Love is kind. Love never fails.

Well, it has been a busy couple of weeks. I am finally feeling like I have my feet under me again. Okay, sorta.

Jack and I blew out of town the end of January, to visit a brand new baby Natalie. Oh and my friends Kim and Shaun (her parents). She was six weeks old and amazing!!!!!!! She is gorgeous! Kim and Shaun do good work I tell you what;) It was great! There was apparently two feet of snow the four days we were there. The airport closed right after we landed so I was happy. We spent the week hanging out w/ "little baby Natalie" as Jack has now named her. There was shopping, playing in the snow and more shopping. We took Jack to Cabella's (the sporting goods store for the rest of the non-hunting/fishing group). They had an aquarium and every animal on the planet is stuffed and on display there. I mean it, polar bears, turkeys, porcupines...all of it!

It was so wonderful to see them and enjoy a little baby again...oh here are a few pics...I will add more once I find the camera...go figure.

RJ is having a ton of fun w/ his friends right now. Hard to believe how fast he is growing up. Had to have a birds and bees talk w/ him when I got back from UT. The joys of having kids six years apart are that I am handling potty training and puberty at the same time. Nothing like being lulled into a false sense of security w/ the potty training. The whole been there-done that- only to be blind sided by RJ growing up too. He is totally into legos still so I feel pretty safe that the interest was fleeting (yes it is what I tell myself so that I can sleep at night...I know, I cross my fingers too;)

Phillip and I are ready for a break so we are looking at what we can do w/ kids that is away from the house and hopefully in the sun. We'll see if there is anywhere else on the planet to go w/ kids besides Disney. Who knows, there is a lot of other land out there in the world, but we are not to sure it supports those of the under 5' crowd.

Pop died today. He had a stroke earlier this week and was finally able to join Muzzy. He will be missed greatly. Although the road was not always gentle and some days it hurt like hell. We can with peace now let him go to be with those he loved and missed so greatly. A man I am still getting to know more deeply even in his absence. Here are the moments I most enjoy remembering...a great grandfather loving his boys...

I can only say it was a total bust...most of it at least.

From surgery in January to my complete failure at having Pop in our home in December, I think I have tanked on most of the things I wanted to do well. I can chalk up the H2C, kitchen and loving the boys desperately; however it has been an awful struggle to gain any ground on my health (both physical and mental) or much else really. It was a year full of one step forward, three steps back. Aggghhh.

Here is to rallying next year and getting it together. May you enjoy the last few days of the year, and know that I am going to spend them in a complete stupor w/ fermented beverages...all our love and hugs. Peace out!

Here are the boys at the church xmas performance. It was great! RJ sang again this year but didn't have to be an angel so he was thrilled! Jack wore the lamb ears for the picture and took them off promptly. He didn't sing but checked out all the kids that did sing:) Ahhh my boys!

Growing Family

Hey everyone...I will hopefully be more diligent about posting as some of y'all will be using this as a life line for the family.

My grandfather, Pop, will be moving in w/ us this week. He has been struggling w/ a knee replacement and has been in the hospital for the second time w/ it. After very little consideration Phillip and I invited him into our home. Really we wouldn't have it any other way. It amazes me that it takes the two of us 6mo to a year to buy a car but the bigger things in life are a no brainer and really don't require much discussion.

The goal is to see how much improvement can be made in the next two months. We are however in the process of evaluating him for other causes for his complications. The joys of medicine are that it really is a game of elimination and as our buddy Dave says, "...it's called a practice for a reason, they are just practicing medicine on you..."; we'll see!

So for all our great support systems out there...thank you! Because of how much everyone has done for us this year we are now in a place where we can do something like this. I remind everyone that says this is "noble" work or that we are really going to be overwhelmed, we have it easy. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law are the ones who are the hero's out there for care. I am in a constant state of awe over what they accomplish w/ only each other to rely upon. We are getting up to 12 hours of home care a day to help me with what he needs...all the fun stuff like getting him showered and dressed and ready for the day. It will free me up to take care of the things that are more enjoyable like appointments, meals and just hanging out w/ him and the kiddos.

Boys are looking forward to it. RJ said this morning, "I like it when you take care of me when I'm not feeling well, he will like it too!" Jack is just going to love having an extra lap for reading books!

All our love and prayers. We will be forgetful in the upcoming months but please just poke me from time to time as I want to avoid becoming myopic...

Here are my cuties on Halloween! There were about 10 rowdy boys that went in a mini gang all around the neighborhood. We were diligent about the "Thank you's" but there was still quite a bit of shoving and tears as they all tried to get to the door first or to the next house first.

RJ was a Storm Trooper (yes his mama is proud!) and Jack was Tigger. Jack is such a candy maniac that he didn't want to stop and wouldn't give up his bag even though it was so heavy he was dragging it from house to house. First piece out was a Hershey bar. He takes after his Nana:)

Hey, hope everyone is well. I have spent the week w/ my grandfather (Pop) at a recovery center. He had knee replacement last week and ran into some problems w/ recovery after leaving the hospital. For being 82 he is doing better then I thought he would but not as well as he thought it would be. A combination of heavy drugs, lots of PT and feeling rather overwhelmed and anxious got to him Monday. He had spent the day alone and was not really tracking very well when I got there Monday night. He was really out of it and slurring his speech so it was time for the family to regroup and spend time with him during the day. That and my Aunt B was taking all the fun for herself by being with him the week before at the hospital when he had a drug reaction. I have spent the last two days with him, just hanging out and getting the straight poop from the staff. Everyone is doing much better today. He is less grumpy and more himself today especially. He was even flirting with the staff:) It was nice to see him transform from a grumpy old man to a dirty old man! I will be there in the morning for PT again and be handing the bat ton to my mum; well more like passing the whip... gotta get her in the groove with the staff and Pop's room-mate situation. George is a dear, once you butter him up and that makes for a much quieter day for both boys. It is so hard being elderly and losing the Independence you so desperately need. I just hope that I am helping in the way he needs. I started to think so when I got back from a longer lunch w/ my sister Kate and the kids (she has the more difficult task of watching the kiddo's while I am at Pop's beck and call). He looked at me and said, "Oh there you are, what took so long?" Must be doing something right. Kate brought the little ones by in their costumes to trick-or-treat and spread some smiles. They were all covered in chocolate and had more in their hands by the time we got to lunch. I think Kate and I were the only ones hungry and were wearing all the candy that wasn't in their bellies. I will post pictures when I get the camera from Kate. They are precious!
